"Cultures do not exist side by side, cultures do not communicate with each other - cultures "flow together", as Ilija Trojanow and Ranjit Hoskote describe it in their 2007 book "Kampfabsage" (a play on the term ‘battle call’ which translates as ‘cancelling the battle’).

Our society has become a transcultural society. It has probably never been defined by a single "national" culture anyway, nor is it a multicultural society, i.e. a society consisting of several "parallel" cultures, and the idea that several cultures in our society communicate with each other is not sufficient to describe our reality.

Something new is constantly emerging, there is a permanent dissolution and reshaping of cultural practices on all levels.

This challenges the recurring debates of a supposed "German Leitkultur", the proponents of which are unable ever to provide a meaningful description of the term.
One of the main intentions of the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN is to present and accompany this constant creolisation of culture in Germany.

  • The music competitions "creole - Berlin Brandenburg" and "creole - global" can be viewed In this spirit. They are - as the name already suggests - aimed at bands and musicians whose original compositions reflect the sound of transcultural Berlin and global migration movements.
  • The same applies to the weekly concert series WorldWideMusic, which has been taking place since 2008. In addition to "standard" music styles, WorldWideMusic also presents band line-ups that can only emerge out of Berlin.
  • Our literature series "1000 Worte tief" (transl. ‘1,000 words deep’) did exactly that in the realm of prose. How to imagine transcultural dance performance was exemplified by i.a. the series ‘Tanz-News’.
  • The WorldWideCinema series "Made in Germany" and "Made in Europe" presented transculturality in pictures.
