La Saison Arabe

Celebrate Arab Culture

 Cinema, concerts and theatre from the Arab world

As always, the 2017 events programme at the multidisciplinary WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN also stands by its motto of “we celebrate cultural difference!” This year's focus event series LA SAISON ARABE further aims at specifically making the creative works of Arab artists more visible.
Conceived and directed by Egyptian theatre scholar Dr. MARWA ABIDOU.

From March, the EU-financed concert series ARAB SONG JAM will be taking place on the 1st Thursday of every month. New interpretations of popular Arabic songs and traditional pieces will be presented by artists from Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iraq and Syria who have fled to Berlin seeking refuge.

ARAB SONG JAM is a sub-project of the EU-financed project “Soundroutes. Notes to get closer” for the integration of refugees in Europe, that Berlin’s WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN is organising in cooperation with partner organisation in Belgium, Italy and Spain. The format, inspired by jazz jams, offers a framework for (refugee) musicians who are well versed in the traditional and popular music and songs of the Arab world to present themselves to a new audience and to new fellow musicians – totally independent of the bands that they might otherwise also play with.

“Fan means art in Arabic,” says theatre scholar Dr MARWA ABIDOU, who invites people to the salon with “the idea to bring together as many Arab-speaking artists as possible, once every month.”

The FAN CAFÉ salon is conceived as a networking meeting for artists and takes place from April on the 1st Saturday of the month, in the café of the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN. The idea of the FAN CAFÉ is to bring together already-established artists with lesser known ones.

    FadfaHdah Workshop 2

    Fadfahdah - Oral history workshop for female refugees from the Arab-speaking world
    Stories, discussions, exchange

    +++ April - December 2017 - Every Friday at 3pm +++

    In April, the second edition of the FADFAHDAH Oral History Workshops for Arab-speaking female refugees will be taking place. The workshop results will be presented at a performance at the end of the year.

    “Fadfahdah” means to get something off your chest. Arab refugees from countries in the Middle East have terrible experiences behind them that they have barely processed: war, violence, displacement, flight and homelessness. To speak openly of these experiences is very difficult, especially for women.
    Therefore we are offering a Fadfahdah workshop at the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN for Arab-speaking female refugees.
    Women can speak openly about their experiences with war, displacement from their homes and asylum in Germany and exchange their experiences with others. If they wish to, they are also supported in conceiving and possibly also presenting performance pieces. If they simply want to speak, or just be there, that is also totally ok.

    The project director is the Egyptian theatre scholar DR MARWA ABIDOU, who used the story-telling theatre format to give voice to the refugee stories of Syrian women, during the first edition of Fadfahdah last year.
    “The Fadfahdah workshop is a kind of discussion circle where Arab-speaking women can express themselves in a safer space, also with the assistance of artistic and theatrical methods,” says project leader Abidou, “by doing this they are empowered to speak about their lives in Germany and defend themselves against racist remarks.”
